A SHORT VIDEO OUTLINING OUR VISION
Спільнота Maker Space
Facework’s Maker Space is an innovative project designed to empower refugees and local residents to connect, make, and learn new skills in their journey to employment.
Whether it’s crafting, designing a product, or launching a business idea, we believe that making together builds community, boosts confidence and breaks down barriers. Indeed, recent research shows that engaging in arts and crafts increases life satisfaction and a sense of purpose, - benefits as significant as being in employment.
What makes the Facework Maker Space special is that we see 'making' in a wider context and believe co-designing making and training activities in a community setting can bridge divides, help people from different backgrounds integrate, and unlock the power of local people sharing practical skills.
Many of the 160 refugees we’ve supported over the last two years have incredible talents that they’re eager to share and refine; skills that could - with support - lead to fulfilling business ventures.
So in 2025 Facework is embarking on a new model to helping refugees find work. We wants to change the emphasis from job searching to job making. We believe we can better help those who have recently arrived in Lewisham - the UK's first Borough of Sanctuary - to gain a deeper understanding of how making can give them greater agency and choice to find work and feel part of the wider community.
In today’s rapidly changing job market, we need innovative, people-centered support services that encourage creativity, self-employment, agility and resourcefulness. We believe this pilot program with its emphasis on learning by doing, mental health support and confidence-building could pave the way for a new model of community integration, skill-sharing and job creation.
Join us at Facework as we launch this exciting initiative in 2025 !
